Staff shortage in IT: reasons, problems, solutions

The biggest problem in the IT sphere is finding and retaining smart specialists. Why, after spending significant funds and efforts, do we find that our best programmer leaves without explanation? Let's try to figure out why this happens and what can be done about it

Reasons
The personnel shortage in small and medium IT companies is connected with the overabundance of low-level specialists, when businesses need middle or senior levels. A similar situation was observed 15-20 years ago, only with lawyers: there are many qualified ones, but no competent ones. It is very difficult for regions to retain a “nurtured” specialist. The trend suggests that the higher the level of a specialist, the closer he moves to Moscow, and this is what most people do - they gain experience in their region and leave for Moscow (if we are talking specifically about Russia).
Where to get it?
Only learn independently. Internal trainings, academies, even banal courses for those who want. This is both good PR and potential hunting of possible candidates. No one says that there can't be nuggets in the regions, but they always need to be sought out and processed. And to retain means to give opportunities for self-realization. Of course, everyone understands that if they leave not from the company, but from the city, then there is no way to retain them. In this case, the company needs to expand, this is a business, and without such decisions, nowhere. Growth can be either quantity or quality, Marx confirmed this. Accordingly, you need to take either a lot of small orders (banks, for example, earn an order of magnitude more on microloans than on lending to large businesses) and build a conveyor, or take unique orders that can give a big profit on technologies, but little or no profit on finances.
There are prospects

There will always be a shortage of personnel, especially in those professions where there is hype / trend. Many have heard that a programmer can work lying on a sun lounger on the beach, sipping his cold mojito and still earn good money. And of course, this attracts many people to this type of activity. But the development of technologies in this industry expands the range of necessary specialties, and sometimes even breaks up existing ones, and the shortage will only increase, but the lower bar will continue to grow and the entry threshold will no longer be the same as 10-15 years ago.
