Are big salaries for programmers a myth?

It is generally accepted, and statistics confirm this, that programmers' salaries are higher than the median (35 thousand rubles in April 2019) in Russia. But why then does your programmer neighbor still drive a used car and not think about moving out of his one-room apartment? Let's discuss it.

What's happening in IT now?

It is not entirely correct to talk about the average programmer salary in the median, because they vary from region to region. But in general, the trend of high cost of programmer work is traced, because there is always demand. Nowadays, it is generally difficult to imagine anything without IT infrastructure, because even a system administrator in a small warehouse with goods is already needed, because it is necessary to implement this warehouse “online” and have access to its nomenclature from anywhere. And this situation will remain as long as specialists of this class are in demand. Everything is decided by the market, and it simply says - “the higher the demand, the more expensive the supply”.

Programmer salaries are constantly growing (in the median version). At the very least, this is due to the technological development of the industry. And to be a high-class specialist, you need to study. A programmer, in principle, never stops learning. And now a large generation has grown up who in the early 2000s were just beginning to learn the programming zen. Having extensive experience, both life and professional, such specialists begin to cost more, which in the mathematical model turns into an increase in the “average” salary.

Management, don't ruin it
However, another point appears: more or less sensible programmers no longer want to work for someone. Having extensive experience in development, good specialists go into business, they open their own studios, team up with colleagues, look for investors and create joint projects - in a word, they grow and strive to earn honestly with their minds. And many get into the business cycle: office rent, accounting, hiring employees, computers, tables and chairs - all this makes the programmer shift towards management. Without experience in management, many, facing difficulties, are forced to first try to overcome all this, but later it becomes clear that you need to stop. Management requires complete immersion and colossal costs. It is necessary to constantly predict the number of projects that can actually be completed, because we know what the customer needs "yesterday".
When you are an involuntary HR
It is also worth paying special attention to the atmosphere in the team, because a programmer, first of all, is an inquisitive person, always looking for something new, he cannot sit for a long time, do monotonous work and not develop. And yes, he always has somewhere to go, even to freelance. And if you have a tense atmosphere in the team, you can forget about its further growth. Take your team to meetups, conferences, with tents and in the fresh air, help them feel like the best on the market, let them know that you are proud of them and only then will your team be productive and well-coordinated.
And finally
If your programmer neighbor posts photos from Egypt or Turkey, don't rush to envy him, we assure you, he still works for a guy from the USA, giving intermediaries more than 50% of what he could have and secretly dreams of his own business. And if he doesn't go anywhere further than his dacha on weekends in his Vesta, know that he is not putting millions in bags, but is just trying to create something of his own, gets burned, gains experience and probably he is no longer a programmer, but is becoming one of the representatives of the new trend of "smart businessmen".
